Lucky you, Judith, seeing Stormbreaker AND meeting Anthony Horowitz, who I think is gorgeous. The other big change in the film is the early introduction of Sabina Pleasure. This beautifully Bond-named character doesn't arrive in the books until about the 3rd one. There is now a graphic novel of Stormbreaker, not written by Horowitz, but looking good.
Hi Marita,
I didn't know that about Sabina Pleasure! I didn't actually catch her surname, and I didn't know she didn't turn up until later books. James didn't mention this either, but he's only read Stormbreaker... I should add that I spoke to his mum, my sister Alison today, and she said he raved about the film when he got home, says it's going to do really well and that there's got to be sequels! Well, from his lips... And yes, Anthony is a really charming person. I had a lovely chat with him at a Walker Books party last year (?), not that he remembered me (nor did I expect him to) and he's very personable. And very good looking, as you note! Cheers. hello Judith--sounds like a lovely day out--and yes, Anthony's lovely(in more ways than one!) Caught up with him at last in person a couple of weeks ago, after having corresponded for years...it was terrific. i'm really thrilled too because he's written a really really nice cover quote for my forthcoming book--my first graphic novel--The Secret Army: Operation Loki!
my son Xavier, who's a film student, has also done a really interesting interview with Anthony--focussing on his screenwriting--which will appear in the September issue of Magpies! Watch out for it--it's really interesting.. Sophie Hi Sophie,
Who is publishing your graphic novel? And who is illustrating? How exciting! And I will look forward to Xavier's interview. What a talented family! Good to hear from you, J x I'm being cheeky here, but I'm searching for someone who can give me an honest assessment of Stormbreaker the movie. My son's just turned nine and read the Stormbreaker book. He's been invited to a birthday party to see the Stormbreaker movie. To date, he has not seen an M rated film, not even on TV or DVD. Could you please tell me just how graphic is the violence (I know about 5 people get killed, and it seems to be by gun fire - possibly machine gun, although that would be a departure from the book)... the classification lists the rating for moderate action violence. He's a great kid, but I'm not sure about him going along with his mates and seeing all this without a parent to talk about it with him. I note that your nephew is four years older than my son. Any advice?
Lisa Hi Lisa,
Tough call, that one! I do wish people wouldn't organise parties that take kids to movies that are rated inappropriately--it makes it so difficult for those kids whose parents decide they don't want them to see an M-rated film. I guess it depends on how sensitive your son is. The worst of the violence is off-screen, cut away from, or implied, but it's still pretty scary and confronting, I'd have thought, for a 9 year old. I'm trying to remember the deaths--two are definitely shot, although you don't see them get shot you do in one case see the shooting (if you get the distinction!) and then the body being removed sort of in the background. Can't remember any machine guns. One villain dies at the hands of a giant squid-thingy (or should that be tentacles!), which is actually rather comic and not as horrible as you expect (the squid is presented as a threat earlier in the film). I personally would probably not take a nine year old to Stormbreaker, but there were kids that age at the screening I went to, and I imagine they were OK. Anyone else?! Judith ABC Books is publishing my graphic novel, and Anthony Davis is the illustrator. It's his first book, but he's been an artist and animator for Disney for many years(till their hand-drawn animation studio closed in Sydney earlier this year.)He's fantastic--the illustrations are really striking! It comes out in October..
And it is indeed really exciting--the fulfilment of a long-held dream, ever since I was a kid and reading Tintin over and over and writing comic strips of my own! I'm so glad that Belinda Bolliger at ABC understands that passion so well, and shares it! Enjoy your blog a lot, by the way, and often duck over to read it! all the very best, Sophie |

As promised, here is the photo of my nephew James and Anthony Horowitz at the Sydney Stormbreaker preview. Note the T-shirt Anthony is wearing—and many thanks to Justin at Walker Books Australia for sending the photo.
