Jo selling her hair in Little Women. Anne dying her hair green in Anne of Green Gables. ("Carrots! Carrots!") Velvet Brown cutting her hair to impersonate a professional jockey. Mary Ingalls having her hair shorn off because of the fever which blinds her. The girl whose hair is cut by Mr Brocklehurst in Jane Eyre. I've been thinking about this all my life. Hair-cutting scenes are huge in movies too.
That's the kinds of examples I was thinking of, Cassandra. And I KNEW you would know! And it's Helen Burns in Jane Eyre who had her hair shorn. And not a children's book, but the poor wee thing in Picnic at Hanging Rock who has her hair shorn and her head painted with gentian violet. All of which reminds me also of the great humiliation of Nits!
how about the Princess Diaries? Mia Thermopoulos (sp?) has lovely bushy hair, which is made sleek and smooth to reveal her 'true' beauty and fitness to become a princess - pah!
(oh, I should read the books before I say that - mustn't judge a book by its movie) and Harry Potter has unruly hair that won't lie flat, which I see as a metaphor for his survival under the oppressive rule of Dursley neglect and conformity. in Scot Gardner's The Legend of Kevin the Plumber, the central character (teenage guy) has dreads, and people see him as a dope-smoking yob (which he kind of is) and then he cuts the dreads off and has a no. 2 shave-comb haircut and is seen as a man (people's perception is also affected by the circumstances he is then in). Anne Shirley trying to dye her hair brown so people stop calling her carrots, and ending up with green hair - such a classic situation. I have brown hair and used to wish it was green! Good to have an example of hair and a bloke, Deborah! Thanks! (And thanks for posting here!)
By the way there is a particularly heart-rending hair-cutting scene in The Boy With Green Hair. Have you ever seen The Boy With Green Hair? It's kind of an art film from the late 40s or early 50s, which distressed me a lot as a child. There's this boy who has green hair, see, and he's mocked and ostracised and life is untenable for him and so his kindly old grandfather tearfully shaves it off. I was similarly distressed as a child by the bit in Harvey where James Stewart almost has the procedure to take Harvey away.
"Emily's Rapunzel Hair" was a CBCA shortlisted book a few years ago. Cecily Matthews & Freya Blackwood.
And speaking of Rapunzel, there seems to be a very funny animated movie version of Rapunzel coming soon. I saw a trailer for it last week! It's to be called "Tangled". Diana Wynne Jones often makes a big deal about the wriggliness or frizziness of people's hair - in the Spellcoat or Crown of the Dalemark for example, and in The Merlin Conspiracy. It's usually a sign of power and magic.
Hair? You can't go past these books:
Fiction: Crazy Hair (2009) - Neil Gaiman, ill.Dave McKean Non-Fiction: Your Hair Grows 15 Kilometres a Year (2004) - Diana Lawrenson, A&U's It's True! series. And for great read-aloud fun: Hubert's Hair Raising Adventure (1960) - Bill Peet YA - Playing Beatie Bow - Abigail has to chop her hair off in a hurry at the end because while she was in the past it grew and now she's supposed to be back on the day she left ... with shorter hair. (When I read it I thought 'ohh!')
Not really a BOOK exactly, but there's Frieda from Peanuts comics 'I have naturally curly hair':-) And there's Hairy MacClary -- though I suppose he's not a hairy human ...
Meg Murray in Madeleine L'Engle's books has hair that is uncontrollable since she stopped wearing it in tightly controlled plaits when she turned thirteen. Ahem.
A really charmer is the picture book Hairs/Pelitos from Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street.
