I really enjoyed 'When You Reach Me' by Rebecca Stead. As I finished the last page I went straight back to the beginning and read it again...twice in one hit!
I'm big fan of Jackie French but to my horror I've somehow completely missed 'Baby Wombat's Week', it'll be a must for my new year reads. Maureen. www.thepizzagang.com My favorites for the year:
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - yeah, I know it is a classic, but I had never read it and I enjoyed it a LOT more than I expected to. The Ten PM Question by Kate deGoldi. I am not sure why this one appealed to me so much. I fell in love with the worry of the main character. Jerk, California by Jonathan Friedman. I liked the characters in this story and the subtlety with which they were developed. Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac. Based on a true story, but with the emotional depth that fiction allows, this book bridges the gap between history and story. When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. I didn't actually LIKE this book as much as other people seem to, but I think it was well crafted. The Mailbox by Audrey Shafer. I like the indirectness of the approach to one of the themes of the novel - the effect that the Vietnam War had on people. The actual story is good, too. The ending is a bit too sugary to be realistic, but I can forgive the author that, because it was such a relief. Eon: Dragoneye Reborn by Alison Goodman. I am not sure that I think that this book was well written, but it was intriguing and different. I enjoyed it. What to Eat by Marion Nestle. Non-fiction. This changed my view of corporate America. It consolidated my thinking about a lot of trends - everything has to be done in the name of profit. Products are only good enough to generate maximum profit for the companies. Ugh. But insightful. I wanted to be "wow"ed by more kids books and YA books, but I wasn't. 2009 wasn't a great kids' book year for me. Laura Walsh Thanks, Laura, and especially for drawing my attention to some US titles I am not familiar with. And I can't BELIEVE I left The 10PM Question off my best of list—I thought that book was certainly one of the best books for older children/younger teens I've read in a long time.
How envious I am of you reading Rebecca for the first time! |

I made a decision when I woke up on New Years' Day that this is going to be a good year. I'm not one for resolutions, I just decided that I've had too many years when I've got to the end and thought, wow, glad that's over. So I am fully intending to hav
