Oh, that dilemma.
Perhaps we have to trust that Australian writers are, on the whole, big enough and handsome enough to not be offended if we talk about someone else. What about the book(s) that just blows(s) you away? Do you keep that a secret? Sometimes a shout-out is just the thing. In the end you want to say something interesting and find where the developments, innovations and perhaps the gaps are, in what is written and what you read. I think we are all enriched by your observations and commentary. Hi Judith, have just added you on Facebook. I really enjoy your blog especially for the YA book recommendations. I'm going to chase up a copy of A Brief History of Montmaray from the library tomorrow. Cheers, Michelle.
Hi Judith,
Thanks for mentioning MY individual book! I'm starting a blog soon (once I can figure out the software) and my (current) idea is that I'll only discuss a book if a) I absolutely loved it and b) no-one else is taking any notice of it and it deserves some attention and/or c) it fits in with a theme I happen to be discussing. I guess the millions of authors I don't mention will just have to cope with it as best they can... But then again, I don't have your job, and besides, hardly anyone would be reading my blog. That didn't really help with your dilemma, did it? Oh. Oh dear. THAT dilemma. I'm afraid I can't help you. Mainly because I am putting together my own blog and I had intended to review books as part of that blog but having read this post YOU have just passed on the dilemma to ME. Plus a couple of other related potential dilemmas. And I haven't even started. Such are the problems with not only working with authors but also getting to know them through the wonders of social media.
And I thought the actual review-writing was going to be the hard bit. Now you tell me I need to worry about whether or not to review in the first place! #1 Mike's comment says it all really. .
Your book-industry friends, colleagues and students will understand your dilemma and will accept if you choose to toss it and start posting without fear or favour. As a reader, I like reviews of new or under-appreciated books and ideas. I love the pic from Nicola's wedding. I forgot that you two knew one another. And she has hair! I actually linked here from Online School's 100 Best Blogs on Kids' Lit: http://tiny.cc/YuG8Z . Go you. T.
The dilemma you pose as to what kind of blog you are going to be is a very real one and very understandable.
At the same time you do have your own writing style and in this posting you have already started to stake out the personality of the blog. The only thought that I have which might help your thinking and evaluation process is as follows. Trust your own instincts and do what you first think of as the more you intellectually evalutate it you will possibly end up doing something which your heart is not committed to and in love with. |
