Good, Judith, some controversy!
I am wondering what happened to Scot Westerfeld this year as I'm sure he had a few books released, and although I am shamefaced at not having read them yet, I know many kids who are loving them. Meanwhile, I am just about to link your post on http://yaliterature.ning.com to see what others think. I am especially upset about Notes from the teenage underground not being there. It was the book that should have won, imho.
I suspect the cbc won't ever mention Scott Westerfeld because a) he's not australian enough and b) he's a bit too sci-fi/fantasy/vampires "out there". Hi Lili,
Is Scott eligible? I am not sure on the rules, or where his books were first published. Be good to clarify that—otherwise, it's definitely a major oversight. Cheers, Judith I could have sworn Scott (with 2 ts) was shortlisted last year (or at least notabled) but the evidence is not there. Obviously some memory cramp of mine. Sorry. But it did get some discussion going;)
I'm not sure what the CBCA eligibility criteria are, but for the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards (which he won), all he needed to be was a Permanent Resident. Which he is.
Scott was also shortlisted for the Queensland Lit Awards last year - http://www.premiers.qld.gov.au/awardsevents/awards/literary/2006_Shortlist/
And Lili, I entirely agree with you about Notes From The Teenage Underground, which I thought was an amazing, vibrant novel, and particularly an amazing, vibrant first novel. Re your comment on The Arrival:
"It's not a picture book—it's a graphic novel and is really more at home in the older readers' category." Playing devil's advocate for the moment, can you really call something a graphic novel if it has no words? Macquarie defines novel (n) as 'a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length'. The Arrival, on the other hand, is a book made up of pictures. A picture book, not withstanding the difficulty comparing one type of pb with another. But at the end of the day, it's a book, with pictures, that demonstrates quality storytelling, and amazing technical ability and design. A novel, in graphic form, you might say... Oh, bugger - like you, Judith, I've gone and contradicted myself. So meh, I suppose as devil's advocate I don't really get a vote anyway. James Oh, James, you always get a vote! But I still argue that The Arrival is a graphic novel. I guess these are shifting terms (like shape-shifting daemons!) still waiting for the culture—and the awards—to catch up.
J A real pity about His Name in Fire and
Lonesome Howl but I am, like you, pleased to finally see a few more books about and/or by women there. I noted the recent article in Reading Time by one of the judges about Critical Literacy, resoundingly rejecting all possible alternatives to a Leavis/canonical tradition - although no mention of postmodernism. But I wondered how much of that thinking is behind the focus on fiction for and about young men? Throwing the feminist out with the bath water? |
