I have been reviewing children's and young adult books for over ten years. I write for a variety of publications; mostly specialist children's literature journals, but also for mainstream publications such as The Melbourne Age newspaper. I will also be writing reviews especially for the Misrule website, so do check back from time to time for new recommendations.

Although the Misrule website is largely dedicated to Australian children's books, the website also includes reviews of books and interviews with their creators from around the world. Australian titles can be identified by this symbol:

In time, the books reviewed on this website will be directly linked to an Australian online bookseller. In the meantime, you might like to visit Gleebooks for online purchases.

The categories to the right are meant as a guide only. The age ranges provided are simply a way of organising reviews, and should not be read as prescriptive about what age child might enjoy a particular book.

Similarly, it should be noted that picture books are not just for the very youngest readers. In recent years, complex and sophisticated picture books for readers in upper primary and even secondary school have emerged.

Although my reviews are never written merely as a "buyers guide", individual reviews will give some information as to the appropriate readership for a given title.

I'd be interested to hear your views on any of the books reviewed, or of the reviews themselves! Visit the Misrule Discussion Forum and let me know what you think!
